John Beltz was Oldsmobile’s chief engineer in 1964 and one of the prime movers of the Toronado and 442 project. Beltz was promoted to Oldsmobile general manager at age 43 in 1969 when Harold N. Metzel retired. Beltz passed away in May of 1972 from cancer at the age of 46. John Beltz is leaning on a dual fan 455 Olds and posing with other experimental Olds engines that never saw production. Here are descriptions of these engines: 1. The 0W-43 all aluminum 455 with 4 valve per cylinders, four overhead cam Weber engine. With a redline of just under 8500rpm it was originally conceived for CAN AM racing. At 3000rpm it put out 300hp and at 6000rpm registered over 600hp. The top output recorded for this engine in the Lansing dyno facility was 700 real hp at 6800rpm. Tests were run with both carbueration and fuel injection. The block was cast from Reynolds 356 alloy and fitted with pressed-in dry steel cylinder liners for the Forged-True 12.20to 1 pistons. Billet steel connecting rods by Carillo was used along with a forged steel crank. The engine weighed in at 50 pounds lighter than the production 455 motor! It was developed at the same time as the ZL-1 Chevy 427 motor. 2. The W-43 4 valve per cylinder 455 developed by JOHN BELTZ , LLOYD GILL , JOE JONES AND FRANK BALL. Rated at 500-550hp with a single Rochester Quadrajet on an aluminum manifold. In part 4 of my Cosmo restoration, I continue cleaning the engine components, a task which was started in the last video. It is actually quite involved to clean and inspect the internal engine parts and it can easily take more time then it does to disassemble and build the engine. While I did clean all the parts from the 4 port Cosmo 13B, I will only be using the housings, oil pan and a few other components. The rest of the engine will be the irons and rotating assembly from a GSL-SE 13B.
Just as I promised last episode, it is finally time to build the engine! Part 12 of my RX-5 Cosmo restoration covers the entire process of building the 6 port 13B Mazda rotary engine. While this engine is a hybrid of GSL-SE RX-7 and Cosmo parts, the process is the same for any rotary from a 12A to a 13B NA, 13B Turbo, 13B-REW or any other variant of the 13B. This video shows the whole process of the engine build, starting from measuring the rotors and covering everything else including clearancing the side seals, assembling the rotors, complete assembly the short block, setting the eccentric shaft end play and installing the front cover and everything underneath it. It’s probably the most complete engine build video outside of what you can buy from the vendors, and as such, is an hour long. After this one, I’m going back to videos under 20 minutes. The newly developed MZR-CD 3.0 direct-injection common-rail turbo diesel engine is matched to with the established 2.6-litre petrol and 2.5-litre turbo diesel units. The 3.0-litre power plant yields a claimed 115kW at 3200rpm and offers a maximum torque of 380Nm at 1800rpm. A new five-speed manual transmission has been adopted so that the greater power and torque generated by the MZR-CD unit will be supported.

About Mazda B-series
The Mazda B-series is also known as the Mazda Drifter. It is a 2-door pick-up truck that was first manufactured in 1961 by Mazda Motor Corporation, owner of Mazda OEM parts. The mark 7 is the current model, which was initially built in 1999 and can be manufactured with one of four body styles and one of two engines.
Mazda has used form first B-Series pickup truck the engine displacement to determine the name. In effect, the B1500 had a 1.5 L engine, and the new B4000 has a 4.0 L V6. Mazda used the ‘Proceed’ name in the Japanese market on the car’s compact pickup trucks. Moreover, another line of larger trucks is available which is called the ‘Mazda Titan’. Nonetheless, the public should be reminded that the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger twins that are marketed in North America are unrelated to the ones sold elsewhere. These vehicles are built by Mazda and the models in North America are developed by Ford.
